I recently contributed to an article on LinkedIn about Balancing Autonomy and Guidelines in Volunteer Management. Below are my thoughts.
In my experience, respect is an integral part of the process, along with the basics, such as clear guidance and expectations.
Respect their time, involvement, and ideas. Reward your volunteers with sincere and fast feedback on their ideas.
Don’t waste volunteers’ precious time and hard work with misleading guidelines or actions. If you know actions with zero chances of implementation, could you make that clear and list all the criteria for success you expect for the job?
Also, getting to know your volunteers and their strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I’m all about finding “the right person for the job.” So, please take some time to get to know your volunteers and discover what motivates them to give back. It’ll be a win-win!
